The neighborhood · Miraflores, Cali
Parque de Miraflores, a historic garden across the street
Herradura House faces the park that gives the neighborhood its shape and name: a horseshoe-shaped green boulevard, protected as part of Cali’s heritage and full of birds.
History
A horseshoe-shaped park
Miraflores began as a planned development in the late 1940s, on former common land known as La Chanca, in southwestern Cali. The first lots were sold in 1947 and, from the start, the neighborhood was laid out around a horseshoe: a green boulevard that is its central space and the starting point of its curving streets.
That boulevard is Parque de Miraflores, which many people call Parque La Herradura. The City of Cali attributes it to the Austrian urban planner Karl Brunner, whose ideas shaped the neighborhood’s 1949 zoning plan. Its triangular layout creates a distinctive perspective effect.
Today it is a Cultural Heritage Asset of Cali, with Level 1 Full Conservation, the highest level of protection, and it is classified as a Historic Garden. That protection aims to preserve its layout, its vegetation and its role as the heart of the neighborhood.

The birds of Miraflores
In late 2025, neighbors began recording the birds that live in or pass through the neighborhood, identifying them by their songs with specialized apps. They have counted more than 30 species, resident and visiting. It is not a scientific survey, but it is a faithful portrait of what you hear every morning.

And in the neighborhood gardens
The green does not stop at the park. Life grows in the home gardens too: at Herradura House there is a cacao tree that bears fruit and orchids grown on wooden posts.
Iguanas and opossums are also seen here, finding shelter in the park’s trees and the home gardens in the middle of the city. Cali has more than 560 recorded bird species and is a well-known birdwatching destination; Miraflores is a good example of why.
